Masters Women 10K: Vallejo holds off Almer in a four-second thriller

Thirty-one Masters Women toed the line in Bismarck on a crisp 39°F September morning — clear skies, a light 6 mph wind, and 86% humidity making for cool but honest racing conditions. At the front, Jill Vallejo of Bismarck controlled the race from start to finish, holding 4th among women throughout and never wavering. Her 8:16/mi average was a cut above, and her 5th-fastest women's split on the 5K-to-finish stretch confirmed she didn't simply coast to the tape.

Right behind her, Rochelle Almer was hunting. Also of Bismarck, Almer moved from 7th to 5th among women over the back half — posting the 4th-fastest women's closing split in the entire field — and whittled the gap down to just four seconds at the line. It was a genuine catch-up: Almer ran the second half faster, but Vallejo had built just enough of a cushion to hold on. Third went to Krystal Wrolstad in 55:55, a comfortable 4:27 clear of 4th-place Andrea Kjergaard (58:19).

The battle for 4th through 9th was a different kind of drama — nearly six minutes of racing compressed into a 26-second window from Sue Johnson (59:40) through Renee Schultz (1:00:39). Johnson's late charge was the most dramatic move in the group, surging from 34th to 23rd among women on the second half. And a special mention belongs to Lori Gietzen of Mandan, who at 64 finished 6th in 59:57 at 9:39/mi — a performance that stands out on any reading of this field.
