F60-69 Marathon: Kong leads the charge through wine country

• Ling-Yuan Kong, 62, wins in 3:41:26 — an 8:27/mi pace that put nearly 19 minutes between her and 2nd place.
• Strong second-half surge: Kong moved from 108th to 88th among all women on the back half, posting the 85th-fastest women's split from 13.1M to the finish.
• Alicia Juarez faded; Nancy Quigley charged: Juarez dropped from 152nd to 168th among women in the second half, while Quigley — who started 209th — climbed all the way to 176th, running the 155th-fastest women's split on that stretch to leapfrog Juarez and claim 5th.
• 17 women finished F60-69, spanning a range from Kong's 3:41:26 to Brigitte Fasciotto's determined 6:17:41.

Ling-Yuan Kong of Houston made the outcome look straightforward, but the numbers tell a more aggressive story. Running 8:27 per mile through the mist and humidity of Sonoma County, she didn't just hold position in the back half — she gained it, moving up 20 spots among all women from the halfway mark to the finish. Catherine Bellman of Larkspur crossed in 4:00:35 for 2nd, and Esther Jin of La Crescenta — age 63 — took 3rd in 4:04:49, the two separated by just over four minutes.

The mid-pack battle had genuine drama. Alicia Juarez of Whittier held 4th at the halfway point but ran a 179th-fastest women's split on the back half, slipping to 4th overall at 4:06:41 — still ahead of 5th, but Nancy Quigley of Weed had other ideas. Quigley was sitting 209th among women at the midpoint and came roaring back with the 155th-fastest women's split on that stretch, finishing in 4:10:30. The gap to Juarez was 3:49 — Quigley made up real ground, just not quite enough to overtake.

Allison Baker (4:18:28) and Robin K Yoon (4:19:40) rounded out the top seven, separated by just 72 seconds. Behind them, the field spread wide: Terrie West, Nancy Avilla, Siew Chuah, Laurie Fernandez, and Mary Anne Marciante — the latter, 68, finishing in 4:50:49 — kept the back half of the field moving. Kathryn Kelly, Mary Hennessy, Sabine Ruppel, Marie Bartoletti, and Brigitte Fasciotto all crossed the finish line on a flat, fast Boston Qualifier course that gave every one of these 17 women a genuine shot at their best.
