Santa Rosa Marathon F40-49: O'Brien Runs Away from the Field

Danielle O'Brien turned in the kind of race this flat, fast Santa Rosa course was built for. Running 6:57 per mile through the Sonoma County wine country on a cool, misty morning, the 43-year-old from Sacramento came through the halfway mark 3rd among women and — despite fading slightly to 7th in the women's field over the back half — had already built a lead in the F40-49 field that no one could touch. Her 3:02:17 winning time was more than seven and a half minutes clear of second place.

Paige Yellen, 48, from Mineola, NY, was the only other runner in the conversation for the top two. She gained a spot in the women's field over the second half — moving from 12th to 11th — and posted the 14th-fastest women's split on the back half, finishing in 3:09:43 at a 7:14/mi average. A solid runner-up, but O'Brien was simply in a different race.

The real drama played out just behind her. Peterson, Diaz, and Morrison — all running 7:47–7:48/mi — converged for a tightly contested battle for third through fifth. Peterson crossed at 3:24:06, Diaz at 3:24:20, and Morrison at 3:24:26, with the entire trio packed into a 20-second window. What makes it more interesting: both Peterson and Morrison were well back at the halfway point and charged through the second half to get there, with Peterson posting the 36th- and Morrison the 38th-fastest back-half splits among women. Diaz, who came in from 45th among women at the midpoint, held her own to take fourth by 6 seconds.

Further back, Nami Kato (3:27:08, 7th, Rancho Cordova) and Alexis Fitzpatrick (3:30:29, 7th, Folsom) rounded out the top seven before the field spread out across a wide range of finish times, with 86 women ultimately completing the F40-49 race.
