M19 & Under Half Marathon: Cason Mitchell Runs Away With It

• Cason Mitchell, 16, wins in 1:14:39 — a 5:42/mi clip that no one in the under-19 field could match.
• 28-second gap to 2nd: Giacomo Mevio (19, Chicago) crossed in 1:15:07, with Mario Aluizo (17) another 4:19 back in 3rd at 1:19:26.
• Tightest cluster of the day: places 9 through 13 — Derek Gomez through Saheer Ahmed — were separated by just 68 seconds across five runners.
• Weekend doubler: RJ Steele (16, Edmond, OK) finished 16th here in 1:33:28 after placing 6th among men in the Saturday 5K; Brandon Nguyen (16) was 20th in 1:41:27 having gone 9th among men in that same 5K.

Cason Mitchell turned in one of the sharpest performances in the 92-runner under-19 field, going out at 5:42/mi and backing it up with the 2nd-fastest split on the final stretch from 10.65 miles to the finish. He moved through the men's field steadily — sliding from 2nd to as deep as 4th before fighting back to 2nd among the men by the line — but within the under-19 race, his margin was never seriously threatened. At 16, he was the youngest of the top five finishers, which makes the winning time land even harder.

Giacomo Mevio gave chase and deserves credit for the 3rd-fastest split on the 6.62M–7.12M segment, working his way from 6th to 3rd among the men across the race. He finished 28 seconds behind Mitchell — close in clock terms, but Mitchell was running away, not being caught. Mario Aluizo (3rd, 1:19:26, 6:04/mi) was the story of the middle miles, posting the 8th-fastest split in the field on the 7.12M–10.65M stretch to hold his podium position. Matthew Conners rounded out the top four in 1:20:12, closing with the 10th-fastest final-segment split.

The battle for the 9th-through-13th spots was quietly one of the most competitive stretches of the morning. Derek Gomez (1:29:08), Andy Ixtabalan Argueta (1:29:16), Alex Schleuning — 14 years old, the youngest named finisher — (1:29:20), Kyle Park (1:29:46), and Saheer Ahmed (1:29:56) all finished within 48 seconds of each other. Schleuning's 1:29:20 at age 14 is worth a second look.

RJ Steele and Brandon Nguyen each made this a two-race weekend, competing in the Saturday 5K before lining up for the half. Steele finished 16th in 1:33:28; Nguyen crossed 20th in 1:41:27. Racing back-to-back days in San Francisco is its own kind of statement.
