Robin Sanderson of Mill Valley made this race look like a controlled tempo run. Starting in 76th place among women, she moved steadily and relentlessly forward — 76th, 52nd, 49th, 38th — and crossed the line in 1:41:58 at a 7:47/mi clip, finishing 33rd among all women. Her final segment from 10.65 miles to the finish was the 16th-fastest women's split on that stretch, confirming she was still accelerating when others were grinding it out on San Francisco's unforgiving streets. No one in this field came close to matching her.

The battle for 2nd was settled with more breathing room than the battle for the podium below it. Vizcarrondo, racing from Miami, held 2nd in 1:48:47 — a solid 8:18/mi — but it was places 3 through 5 that provided the real drama. Gomez (1:55:11), Steffen (1:55:21), and Tsao (1:55:29) finished within 18 seconds of each other, all running roughly 8:47–8:49/mi. Just off the podium, Jacqui Bos (6th, 1:56:03) and Winnie Chen (7th, 1:56:04) were separated by a single second, with Marie-Josee Tremblay of Quebec rounding out the top eight in 1:56:45. The field stretched deep from there, with Mar Hershenson (9th, 1:57:36) and Catherine Sui-Miller (10th, 1:58:43) both finishing under two hours, and Carole Quere of Brest the last to break 2:00, crossing in 1:59:20 for 11th.
