Napa Valley 5K: Joel Chino-Kaydahzinne dominates M45-49 in the rain

In a chilly, rain-soaked Napa morning, Joel Chino-Kaydahzinne of Vacaville made the M45-49 race look straightforward. His 27:59 finish at a 9:00/mi clip put him 3:48 ahead of runner-up Michael Lucenti (31:47, 10:14/mi) — a margin that speaks for itself. While the rest of the field was still working through the first half of their race, Chino-Kaydahzinne was already done.

Lucenti's second-place finish in 31:47 was comfortable enough, but the real drama unfolded just behind him. John Abreu made the trip from Lihue, Hawaii count, claiming 3rd in 32:33. Then came a genuine dogfight: Kevin Hultgren of Napa (32:37) and Saint Helena's Nate Morrill (32:39) were separated by a mere two seconds across 3.1 miles, running virtually stride for stride at 10:30 and 10:31/mi respectively. That's the kind of finish that keeps you checking the clock long after you've crossed the line.

Dave Malabuyo rounded out the top six in 34:57, then a wider gap opened before Darnell Howard (7th, 39:15) led the back half of the field home. The two Marlons — Fronda (9th, 41:40) and Bernardino (10th, 43:44) — both from Antioch, CA, added a local angle to the mid-pack story. Tim Matthews of Napa closed out all 17 finishers in 57:48, crossing in conditions that tested everyone who toed the line on a raw March morning in wine country.
