M70-74: Murray and Yao Wage a 26.2-Mile Duel in the Cold

Steven Murray came into the race moving through the men's field in waves — dropping from 1,304th to 1,804th in the middle miles as the pace took its toll, then grinding back to 1,379th by the finish at 7:48/mi. It was a race of drift and recovery, and in the end he had just enough. Ming Yao, meanwhile, ran the opposite kind of race: patient early (2,206th among men at 10K), then methodically reeling in position after position to finish 1,427th. The 38-second margin between them tells you how close it was — but it was Yao doing the catching and Murray doing the holding.

The gap to the podium's third step was considerably wider. Rainer Schochat of Berwyn, IL crossed in 3:46:59 at 8:39/mi — 22 minutes behind Yao, but with a story of his own: he entered the men's field ranked 4,850th at 10K and finished 3,265th, a sustained forward march across 26.2 miles. Further back, the field tightened dramatically. William Cook (10th, 4:08:00) and Weidong Tan (11th, 4:08:01) — traveling from Scranton and Beijing, respectively — finished just one second apart, while Thomas Thomson (12th, 4:08:59) was less than a minute behind them. At "The People's Marathon," where no prize money changes hands and the U.S. Marines set the stage, 142 men in the M70-74 field showed up and delivered — and the race at the front was as hard-fought as anything on the course.
