In a field of 423, Doreen McCoubrie of West Chester, PA, made her intentions clear from the gun. Her gender place improved steadily through every major checkpoint — from 379th among women at the first split all the way to 319th by mile 35K — and she never relinquished the lead in her field. Her 7:50/mi average held firm even through the late miles, where she posted the 303rd-fastest women's split on the 35K-to-40K stretch, keeping the pressure on. The result: a commanding 3:25:21 and a wire-to-wire victory.

Behind her, Yanhong Jiang of Beijing put on one of the more eye-catching performances of the day. Starting deep in the women's field — 1,144th at the first checkpoint — she reeled in competitors all the way to the finish, crossing in 3:36:02 (8:14/mi) for second place. Leticia González of Morelia took third in 3:43:53, though her trajectory told a different story: she slipped steadily through the women's standings as the race wore on, suggesting the early pace cost her in the back half. Cheryl Conner of Columbus mirrored Jiang's pattern, climbing from 1,571st among women early on to 938th at the finish, good for 4th in 3:45:23.

The race's closest duel played out just off the podium. Julie Booth of West Hartford and Stephanie Kroll of Kansas City ran nearly the entire race at a near-identical clip — Booth clocking 3:50:14 and Kroll 3:50:21 — with just seven seconds separating them after 26.2 miles. Booth had actually faded slightly on the 30K-to-35K segment, which is where Kroll made up ground, yet Booth held on for 5th.
