M45-49: Kerry Nehil Runs Away With It in Kauai's Heat

Kerry Nehil, 47, from nearby Kalaheo, set the tone from the gun. Running at 7:05 per mile in 77°F humidity, he held a measured position in the men's field through the midpoint before settling into 20th among the men by the finish — a composed, efficient effort that no one in M45-49 could match. His margin over Dai Kelly was 1:02, which in a race this close at the front is a comfortable victory.

Kelly, 48, out of Kailua, was the class act of the second half, posting the 22nd-fastest split among the men on the 11.05-mile-to-finish stretch. He held his ground to claim 2nd in 1:33:52 at 7:10/mi. Corey Fujita, 46, rounded out the podium in 1:40:49 — nearly seven minutes back — but showed real strength through the middle segment, posting the 38th-fastest men's split on the half-to-11.05-mile stretch.

Scott Mann deserves a mention for the most purposeful second half in the group. Starting the race in 72nd place among the men, he clawed his way to 55th by the finish, fueled in part by the 35th-fastest men's split on the 11.05-to-finish leg. That kind of sustained late-race surge in Kauai's humidity is no small thing. Jeremiah Wehland, 45, also moved forward in the back half, going from 66th to 59th among the men to close out 5th in M45-49.

Down the leaderboard, Fred Lee and Joe Tatar ran nearly identical races — 2:05:36 and 2:05:38 — with Lee edging 14th and Tatar settling for 15th by the slimmest of margins. Two seconds across 13.1 miles on a warm Kauai morning. That one stings.
