M55-59 at Kaua'i Marathon: Eric Wright Runs Away with It

• Eric Wright won the M55-59 group in 3:45:52 (8:37/mi), finishing nearly 69 minutes ahead of runner-up Ethan Grant.
• Ethan Grant (4:54:18) edged Edmon Battulayan (4:59:46) for second by just over five minutes, with three more finishers clustered within the next 22 minutes behind them.
• Brad Ladwig was the strongest mover in the back half, climbing from outside the top 160 among men early on to finish 130th among men by the line.

Eric Wright simply belonged in a different race. Running 8:37 per mile through Kauaʻi's 77°F humidity, he built his lead methodically — reaching his best position among men (23rd) by the halfway point before settling back to 27th at the finish. That mid-race peak tells the story: Wright was running hard enough to mix it up with men of all ages deep into the field, and his 3:45:52 left the rest of the M55-59 group in a different timezone entirely.

Behind him, the real contest was for second and third. Ethan Grant (Cambridge, MA) ran a steady 11:14/mi to clock 4:54:18, while Edmon Battulayan (Kalaheo, HI) was moving in the wrong direction — he entered the second half comfortably placed among men but faded steadily, eventually finishing 5:19:46 in third. Grant's margin was comfortable enough at five-plus minutes, but Battulayan's late drift meant what looked like a potential battle for silver never quite materialized.

The next three finishers — Dean Wagner (5:27:56), Joe Zimmerman (5:33:21), and Darren Minnemann (5:39:12) — were packed within 12 minutes of each other across places six through eight, a tight little cluster grinding through the Kauaʻi heat. Raymundo Quintana brought it home last in 6:48:01, more than an hour behind Wright's winning time but completing all 26.2 miles on a warm, humid Hawaiian morning — no small thing in itself.
