Julia Madsen made the F40-49 race look straightforward, but the numbers behind her performance were anything but ordinary. Running at 8:54 per mile across 30 kilometers of wet Sacramento roads in 51°F rain and 14 mph wind, she locked in at 3rd among all women from the first checkpoint and never budged. Her 2nd-fastest women's splits on both Lap 1 and Lap 2 show this wasn't a front-loaded effort — she was consistently one of the quickest women on the course, start to finish.

Behind her, the race for 2nd in the age group was a genuine fight. Klink came through the Out & Back with the 9th-fastest women's split and had moved up from 11th to 9th among women by the end of Lap 1, a position she'd hold all the way home. Coyle, meanwhile, was a model of consistency — sitting 10th among women at every single checkpoint — and answered on Lap 2 with the 9th-fastest women's split of her own. She closed, but Klink's earlier work had built just enough cushion.
