F50-54 at CIM 2024: Salem's Sub-3:01 Dominates the 50s

• Amory Salem won the F50-54 age group in 3:00:50 (6:54/mi) — nearly 12 minutes clear of runner-up Leila Khazaeni.

Amory Salem of Cambridge, MA, made the F50-54 race look almost straightforward — almost. Her 3:00:50 at 6:54 per mile wasn't just a win; it was a statement. She entered the women's field around 188th early on, drifted back as far as 206th through the middle miles, then reeled it back in to finish 188th among all women — a patient, controlled performance that never truly wobbled. Her margin of victory, 11 minutes and 60 seconds over Leila Khazaeni, was the widest gap between any two consecutive finishers in the top 10.

Khazaeni (Redlands, CA) and Anna Vasina (San Jose, CA) traded places throughout the women's field before settling into 2nd and 3rd in 3:12:50 and 3:15:55 respectively. Vasina posted the 346th-fastest split in the women's field on the 25K–30K segment, showing she still had legs in the back half. Min Zheng of San Diego closed out 4th in 3:18:50, her 35K–40K split ranking 353rd among all women — a solid finish to lock up the final podium spot.

The battle for 5th through 9th was where the real racing happened. Eileen O'Connor (West Roxbury, MA) went out strong — her Half-to-25K split ranked 524th in the women's field — and held on for 5th in 3:22:37. Behind her, Melanie Cravens, Colleen Casey, Chunfang Zhao, and Yuting Zhang all finished within 69 seconds of each other, a genuine pack finish that took the better part of three hours to sort out. Zhao and Zhang, both from San Diego, were inseparable: 19 seconds apart at the line, 8th and 9th.

With 204 finishers in the F50-54 group and four runners breaking 3:20, this was one of the stronger age-group showings at CIM 2024. Salem's sub-3:01, however, stood apart — the kind of number that anchors a leaderboard.
