Behind him, the race for the podium was a genuine fight. William Brain of Rome, NY took second in 22:33 (7:15/mi), with James Warncke of Whitesboro, NY just 22 seconds back in third at 22:55 (7:23/mi). David Morehouse of New Hartford, NY was only six more seconds behind in fourth at 23:01 (7:25/mi) — a span of 28 seconds covering three athletes, all age 61, all pushing hard through the same thick air. Paul Schaffer rounded out the top five in 23:51 (7:41/mi), with Joseph Nimey sixth in 24:18 (7:49/mi).

The field stretched deep across all 92 finishers. Wayne Rice brought it home seventh in 24:51, while Dale Lallier (26:59), Ken Phelps (27:37), and John Geiser (28:00) filled out the top ten. Mike Palmer finished just two seconds behind Geiser in 28:02 — the closest gap in the top eleven — with James Crumrine, John Bednarczyk, and Tony Vandermark all posting times in the 28s and 29s to keep the middle of the field competitive. Every second earned on a morning like this one was hard-fought.
