Farris looked like the man to beat for the first half of the race. He held the top spot among men through the early checkpoints and logged the fastest men's split on the Willow Creek→Beals Point segment — a strong middle stretch that suggested he had the legs to hold on. But Smith, running in second through those same checkpoints, had other plans. Somewhere between Beals Point and Rattlesnake Bar, Smith shifted gears and posted the fastest men's split on that leg, moving to the front and never relinquishing it. His 7:20:46 finish at an 8:49/mi clip was in a different class from the rest of the 28-man field.

Farris held second all the way home in 7:36:08 — a respectable 9:07/mi average, and a clear podium finish, just outrun in the back half.
