Women's 35K: Trnovcova leads wire-to-wire through the redwoods

• Zuzana Trnovcova won in 2:56:03 (8:06/mi), holding 1st among the women from start to finish and posting the fastest women's split on the Skyline 1→Skyline 2 segment.
• Lauren Matheou was a clear and consistent 2nd, finishing in 3:13:30 — 17:27 behind Trnovcova, with the 2nd-fastest women's Skyline split to match her place.
• The race's most dramatic move: Tracy Ballinger (3:52:30) ran the 4th-fastest Skyline split to overtake Emily Sharp (3:53:40) for 3rd — a 1:10 gap at the finish after Sharp had held 3rd through the middle stages.
• Katharina Kroll made the biggest climb of the day, moving from 7th to 5th by the finish in 3:59:14.

Zuzana Trnovcova, 39, from San Francisco, was untouchable. She led the women's field at every checkpoint, crossed in 2:56:03 at 8:06/mi, and owned the fastest women's split on the Skyline 1→Skyline 2 stretch — the race's signature ridgeline passage through Huddart County Park's moss-draped redwoods. Lauren Matheou, 43, from Half Moon Bay, was equally consistent: 2nd at every checkpoint, 2nd on the Skyline segment, 2nd at the line in 3:13:30. Their gap was decisive, but Matheou's performance was a statement in its own right.

Behind them, the podium battle was anything but settled. Emily Sharp, 29, held 3rd through the early and middle stages, but Tracy Ballinger, 43, from Boulder Creek, had other plans. Ballinger ran the 4th-fastest Skyline split in the women's field — faster than Sharp's 3rd-fastest — and came through at the finish in 3:52:30, edging Sharp by 1:10. Sharp's 3rd-place Skyline split wasn't enough to hold the position; Ballinger's late surge was the defining move of the women's race.

Katharina Kroll, 34, from South San Francisco, added another subplot: she entered the Skyline segment in 7th, exited in 5th, and held that spot to the line in 3:59:14 — the only finisher in the top five to gain two places across the field. Behind the top five, seven finishers came in between 4:03 and 4:19, led by Terri Choe (6th, 4:03:36) and Rebecca Blum (7th, 4:05:17), with Mackenzie Jiosa just three seconds back in 8th at 4:05:20. All 27 women finished well within the course's 8.5-hour limit.
