Masters Female 5K: Noriega blazes to the win in William Land Park

• Jamie Noriega, 45, wins in 20:03 (6:27/mi) — a 52-second margin over runner-up Beverley Anderson-Abbs.
• Beverley Anderson-Abbs, 62, finishes 2nd in 20:55 (6:44/mi) — the fastest 62-year-old on the course and the standout performance of the day by age.
• Lisa Bartuska and Leah Zarchy separated by less than a second — 26:11.18 vs. 26:11.98 — for 16th and 17th place respectively.
• Sherry Burton and Silvia Lua likewise split by 0.21 seconds — 26:35.07 and 26:35.28 — for 18th and 19th.

On a cool Sacramento morning in William Land Park — 62°F with a light breeze, about as good as fall racing gets in the Central Valley — Jamie Noriega of Folsom ran the Masters Female 5K exactly as a winner should. Her 6:27/mi average produced a 20:03 finish, and she never needed to look over her shoulder. The 52-second gap she built over 2nd place was decisive, not lucky.

The performance directly behind her, however, deserves its own headline. Beverley Anderson-Abbs, 62, of Sacramento crossed in 20:55 at 6:44/mi — a pace that would be impressive for a competitor half her age. She finished 1:11 ahead of 3rd-place Jillian Hazeleaf (22:06, 7:07/mi), making the gap between 2nd and 3rd larger than the gap between 1st and 2nd. Further back, Elizabeth Hiers (4th, 22:35) and Ellen Raco (5th, 24:10) rounded out the top five, with Raco — age 67 — adding another age-defying note to an already impressive podium.

The mid-pack delivered two of the tightest finishes in the field. Lisa Bartuska and Leah Zarchy ran nearly identical races and paid for it at the line — Bartuska edging through in 26:11.18 to Zarchy's 26:11.98, a margin of 0.80 seconds for 16th and 17th. Just three places later, Sherry Burton (26:35.07) and Silvia Lua (26:35.28) staged a near-replay, separated by 0.21 seconds for 18th and 19th. In a field of 476 Masters women, those two micro-battles were the race within the race.
