F18-39: Assefa Holds Off a Three-Way Sprint at the Front

• Tigst Assefa won the F18-39 age group in 2:15:41 (5:11/mi), never relinquishing the lead across all six checkpoints.

• Degitu Azimeraw was the closer of the race, moving from 5th to 4th in the final stretch with the fastest women's split on the 40K-to-finish segment.
• Catherine Reline Amanang'ole, who ran 4th for much of the race, was overtaken by Azimeraw late and finished 5th in 2:21:20 — nearly 6 minutes clear of 6th place.

Tigst Assefa controlled this race from the gun. She led at every checkpoint and posted the fastest women's split on the 5K–10K segment — a signal that she was setting the terms early. Hellen Obiri tracked her step for step, never more than a shadow behind, and Joyciline Jepkosgei completed a front trio that ran in lockstep formation through the overcast London morning, a 14 mph wind doing nothing to shake their composure.

The real drama at the front was settled in decimals. Assefa crossed in 2:15:41, Obiri in 2:15:53, and Jepkosgei — who had the fastest women's split on the 20K-to-half segment — in 2:15:55. Twelve seconds separated first from third across 26.2 miles. Jepkosgei's 2nd-place split through the middle of the race suggested she had the legs to threaten, but Assefa's early pace-setting proved decisive.

Behind them, the race had a different storyline. Azimeraw spent most of the afternoon in 5th, but she saved her best running for last — the fastest women's split from 40K to the finish — and that surge was enough to pip Amanang'ole, who had held 4th from the opening kilometres. Amanang'ole's 4th-fastest women's split on the 5K–10K segment showed she, too, came out swinging early; she simply had nothing left when Azimeraw came calling.

Further back, Eilish McColgan ran 7th in 2:24:51, and the British contingent of McColgan, Julia Paternain, Rose Harvey, Louise Small, and Jessica Warner-Judd filled places 7 through 11, separated by just over 4 minutes among them. Verity Hopkins rounded out the 12-woman field in 2:36:36.
