• McGrath (Hampton, NY) ran the 10M→11M mile in the 10th-fastest men's split in the field, closing hard — but Hennessy answered with the 13th-fastest men's split on that same stretch to hold the lead.
• Matthew Carroll (Germantown, TN) was the early mover, posting the 19th-fastest men's split on the 10K→8M segment and climbing from 27th to 19th among men before finishing 3rd in 1:20:49.
• A field of 1,204 Masters Men braved 35°F and misty Memphis streets — the largest sub-group on a course that winds through the St. Jude campus before finishing at AutoZone Park.

William Hennessy came to Memphis and got every bit of a race he could have wanted. Running at a 5:60/mi clip through the cold, damp morning, the Atlanta native held a position between 12th and 14th among all men for most of the back half of the course. He never truly ran away from the field — he simply refused to let it catch him, holding his nerve through the final miles to cross in 1:18:35 and claim the Masters Men title.

Shaun McGrath made it interesting. The Hampton, NY runner tracked Hennessy's position through the middle miles, steadily climbing from 20th among men at the start to 16th by the finish. His 10th-fastest men's split on the 10M→11M stretch was a genuine surge — but Hennessy's 13th-fastest men's split on that same mile told the story: the leader felt the pressure and responded. The 20-second gap at the line was the product of two men racing hard in opposite directions of the same stretch of Memphis pavement.

Matthew Carroll gave the top two something to think about early. The Germantown, TN local — racing close to home — posted the 19th-fastest men's split in the field on the 10K-to-8M segment, vaulting from 27th to 19th among men in the process. He couldn't quite sustain that pace to challenge for the win, but his 1:20:49 finish (6:10/mi) was a clear 3rd, nearly two full minutes ahead of 4th-place Garrison Hickey (1:24:49). Behind them, a tight cluster of Memphis-area runners — Steve Hallock (6th, 1:26:31), Christian Lemon (7th, 1:26:47), and Will Moore (10th, 1:27:18) — gave the local crowd plenty to cheer for on a raw December morning.
