Rosie Weber-Kearns of San Rafael didn't lead at any of the early checkpoints — she sat as far back as 5th among women through the middle miles — but she had a plan. When it mattered most, she unleashed the fastest closing split in the entire women's field from 10.65 miles to the finish, sweeping past everyone to cross in 1:18:46 at a 6:01/mi average.

Aubrey Roberts of Palo Alto ran a composed, controlled race to claim 2nd in 1:25:34, backing her position with the 3rd-fastest second-half split among women. But the most jaw-dropping story unfolded behind her. Jessica Lujan, 53, from Olivos, was buried deep in the women's field — 1,677th — at the first checkpoint. She then put together one of the most extraordinary climbs of the day, vaulting to 1st among women by the midpoint and holding on for 3rd in 1:26:24. Her second-half split ranked 24th among all women, a testament to a perfectly executed negative split.

Hot on Lujan's heels was Oakland's Aimee Trujillo, who crossed in 1:26:25 — one second back — with the 2nd-fastest closing split among women. Trujillo tracked down nearly everyone in the second half but ran out of real estate. Rounding out the top five, 21-year-old Triya Roy of Cupertino finished in 1:30:03, climbing from 9th to 5th on the strength of the 4th-fastest closing split in the women's field. The top five women all made significant moves in the back half — a race that truly came alive after the turn.
