M75-79: Hyungbae Lee Runs Away With It in San Francisco

• Hyungbae Lee, 75, wins in 2:00:17 (9:11/mi), nearly eight minutes clear of runner-up Milton Moore (2:08:01).

Hyungbae Lee, representing Seoul, put together one of the more composed performances in this group. Starting conservatively — he was outside the top 1,000 among men through the early miles — he found his rhythm and steadily climbed through the field over the second half, logging the 966th-fastest split among men on the 6.62M-to-10.65M segment before holding form to the line. His 9:11/mi average on a humid San Francisco morning was the class of this field.

Milton Moore of Nashville ran a consistent if quietly fading race, drifting back through the men's field across all six checkpoints to finish in 2:08:01 (9:46/mi). That's a respectable 7:44 behind Lee, but Moore was never a serious threat to the lead — the gap was already established well before the halfway point.

The most dramatic subplot belonged to Goldfarb and Weiner, both from Southern California. Both men were flying through the first half — Goldfarb posted the 105th-fastest first-half split among all women in the field, and Weiner was right behind at 107th — but neither could sustain it. They plummeted through the standings in the second half, eventually crossing the line in 2:37:11 and 2:37:13 respectively. Two seconds separated them after 13.1 miles, with Goldfarb edging Weiner for 3rd place.

Jim Doti of Villa Park finished 5th in 2:41:05 (12:17/mi), having run the back end of the race more evenly than the Goldfarb-Weiner pair — he actually gained ground over the final 2.5 miles. Edgardo Alba of Menlo Park rounded out the six-man field in 3:01:04, crossing the line in just over three hours at 13:49/mi.
