Women's Half Marathon: Odenheimer Surges Late to Claim Napa

• Jen Odenheimer won in 1:16:35 (5:51/mi), overtaking the early leader with the fastest women's split on the final 6.2-mile stretch.
• Chloe Gustafson led wire-to-nearly-wire and posted the fastest women's split on the middle segment (3.1M→6.9M), finishing 2nd in 1:18:20 — 1:45 back.
• Keli Dennehy climbed from 6th at the first checkpoint to 3rd by halfway and held it, crossing in 1:20:22 with the 3rd-fastest middle split among the women.
• Amy Crain, 45, moved from 8th to 4th across the race and finished in 1:22:07 — the standout age performance of the top ten.

In cold, wet conditions — 40°F and light rain rolling through Napa Valley — Chloe Gustafson of Littleton, CO came out swinging. She held the lead among women through the first checkpoint and through the middle stretch, where she also posted the fastest women's split of anyone in that segment. Through 6.9 miles, this was her race to lose.

Then Jen Odenheimer took it. The Portola Valley runner had been sitting in second place from the opening miles, patient and controlled at 5:51/mi. On the back half — from 6.9 miles to the finish — she ran the fastest women's closing split of the day, reeling Gustafson in and pulling clear. The final margin of 1:45 makes it look comfortable, but the lead changed hands only once, and only late.

Keli Dennehy of Bozeman, MT was the race's most prominent mover in the top ten. Running 6th through the first checkpoint, she posted the 3rd-fastest middle-segment split among the women and arrived at the 6.9-mile mark in 3rd — a position she never surrendered, finishing in 1:20:22. Rebecca Wheeler (4th at halfway, 5th at the finish, 1:22:49) ran the 4th-fastest middle split but couldn't hold off Amy Crain, who quietly climbed from 8th to 4th with a 1:22:07 finish at age 45 — the most quietly impressive result in a very fast top ten.

Behind the podium, the field stayed tight: 5th through 10th were separated by just 1:41, with Sarah Klass (6th, 1:23:32), Kristina Shideler (7th, 1:23:42), and Alana Kaplan (8th, 1:24:05) all trading places in a pack that made the most of a chilly Napa morning.
