Napa Valley Half Marathon F40-44: Hyer surges home in the rain

• Suzy Hyer wins in 1:26:28 (6:36/mi), moving from 30th among women at the first checkpoint to 17th by the finish — the 8th-fastest women's closing split from 6.9M to the line.
• Podium spread: just 1:25 separates Hyer from 3rd-place Sarah Evans (1:27:53, 6:42/mi), with Celeste Prothro slotting in 2nd at 1:27:31 (6:41/mi).
• Amanda Eardley fades late: running as high as 17th among women through the middle segment, she slipped to 26th by the finish and 4th in F40-44 at 1:28:37 — caught by Cristin Newkirk-Thompson (5th, 1:28:40, 6:46/mi) in the final miles.
• Laurelly Dale (7th, 1:31:59) and Melissa Chen (15th, 1:40:54) bookend a deep mid-pack, while Elyse Corwin (16th, 1:45:36) and Sandra Midkiff (17th, 1:45:37, 8:03/mi each) finished a single second apart — Corwin holding the edge by the timing chip.

Forty-degree temperatures and a steady drizzle greeted 163 finishers in F40-44 at Napa on March 3rd, and the conditions set up a race that rewarded patient runners who saved something for the back half. Nobody demonstrated that better than Suzy Hyer of San Anselmo. She sat 30th among women through the opening 3.1 miles, hadn't cracked the top 25 by the midpoint checkpoint, and then unleashed the 8th-fastest women's closing split of the entire race to cross in 1:26:28 — a 6:36/mi effort that was simply a different gear than anyone else in F40-44 could match.

Celeste Prothro (San Francisco) was the steadiest of the chasers, holding 22nd among women through both middle checkpoints and finishing there at 1:27:31 with a 6:41/mi average. Sarah Evans of Corte Madera ran the best middle segment of the three podium finishers — 17th-fastest women's split from 3.1M to 6.9M — and closed 3rd in 1:27:53 (6:42/mi). The real drama for 4th came from Amanda Eardley, who had climbed to 17th among women through the middle stretch before fading to 26th overall among women by the tape. That opened the door for Cristin Newkirk-Thompson (Reno), who posted the 21st-fastest women's closing split to finish just three seconds behind Eardley at 1:28:40.

Carmen Baxter (6th, 1:29:39) rounded out the sub-1:30 club, and the field stretched steadily back through Christina Jimenez (8th, 1:33:08), Michele Arnold (9th, 1:34:39), and Ashleigh Korves (10th, 1:35:14) before the rain-soaked pack thinned into the 8:00/mi range and beyond.
