Men's Half Marathon: Skogsberg steals the lead and holds it home

• Richard Skogsberg (San Francisco, CA, age 27) won in 1:07:19 at 5:08/mi — the fastest man on the 3.1M→6.9M segment, where he moved from 3rd to 1st.
• Garrett Patrick (Daly City, CA, age 31) finished 2nd in 1:07:29, just 10 seconds back — he led through the first checkpoint but couldn't match Skogsberg's mid-race surge.
• Stephen Rathbun (Westfield, NJ, age 31) crossed 3rd in 1:07:30, one second behind Patrick — and posted the 2nd-fastest men's closing split (6.9M→Finish), a late charge that nearly caught him.
• Jon Pierce (Portland, OR, age 35) ran a composed, wire-to-wire 4th in 1:08:03, holding his position from gun to tape with the 2nd-fastest men's split on the 3.1M→6.9M segment.

In cold, wet conditions — 40°F, light rain, and 84% humidity — the men's race at the 2024 Napa Valley Half Marathon came down to a decisive mid-race move. Garrett Patrick set the early pace and held the top spot through the first two checkpoints, but Richard Skogsberg had other plans. Running the 3.1M-to-6.9M stretch faster than anyone else in the men's field, Skogsberg swept from 3rd to 1st and never looked back, finishing in 1:07:19 at a 5:08/mi clip.

Behind him, the battle for 2nd and 3rd was genuinely gripping. Patrick, who had led for most of the race, faded just enough in the closing miles to finish in 1:07:29. Rathbun, meanwhile, posted the 2nd-fastest men's closing split and came charging — crossing in 1:07:30, just one second behind Patrick. The finish times were nearly identical; the effort to get there was not. Rathbun ran the final stretch faster and caught up ground, but Patrick had just enough of a cushion to hold 2nd.

Jon Pierce (1:08:03) was the model of consistency, sitting 4th from start to finish and backing it up with the 2nd-fastest men's split on the middle segment. Jason Karbelk (5th, 1:09:59) rounded out the top five, while Dmitry Kislyuk (6th, 1:10:35) and Veeresh Neralagi (7th, 1:10:39) — both 5:23/mi — battled closely behind. The remaining 861 finishers completed a men's field of 881 across the wet Napa Valley course.
