M65-69: Loutit edges Ramirez in a 21-second thriller at Napa

Jeff Loutit of Los Altos crossed in 3:34:10 to claim the M65-69 title, but the margin was paper-thin: Ruben Ramirez of Alameda finished just 21 seconds back at 3:34:31. The real drama was in how those 21 seconds were earned and nearly surrendered. Loutit was the stronger closer — his 20M-to-finish split ranked 190th among all men — but Ramirez had been the aggressor through the middle of the race. Ramirez posted the 206th-fastest men's split on the 13.1M→20M stretch, and his gender place actually improved from 234th to 222nd across that segment before fading back to 245th by the finish. He made up ground in the heart of the race; Loutit made it stick in the final miles.

Michael Castillo, a Napa local running in his own backyard, rounded out the podium in 3:41:04 (8:26/mi) — a solid 6:54 behind the winner, but comfortably clear of 4th-place Chris Glatt of Overland Park, who finished in 3:43:05. Castillo's 13.1M→20M split ranked 240th among the men, just ahead of Glatt's 276th on the same stretch, keeping the podium order intact. Tom Cali of Pasadena was 5th in 3:55:09, his gender place sliding from 332nd to 387th after the half — the most pronounced fade in the top five.

Behind the leaders, Tony Augimeri (3:59:08) and Des Walsh of Los Angeles (4:05:55) rounded out the sub-4:10 contingent, with Jim Janelle of Aurora close behind at 4:10:15. The back of the field showed real grit across a cool, breezy Napa morning: Anatoly Kuznetsov of Miami brought it home in 5:49:38 to complete all 15 finishers in M65-69, every one of them covering 26.2 miles on a day that asked something of everyone.
