Napa Valley Marathon F55-59: Xiang-Hong Song Runs Away With It

• Xiang-Hong Song won the F55-59 race in 3:19:30 (7:37/mi), more than 8 minutes 45 seconds clear of runner-up Jing Chen.
• Song climbed from 44th to 30th among women across the race's four tracked checkpoints, posting the 27th-fastest women's split on the 10K-to-half-marathon stretch.
• Claudia Samayoa (4th, 3:34:21) ran the 74th-fastest women's split from mile 20 to the finish — the strongest closing leg among the top four in F55-59.
• Jeanne Marchand was the field's biggest mover, surging from 148th among women at the first checkpoint all the way to 113th by the finish, clocking a 100th-fastest women's split on that same 20M-to-finish stretch on her way to 5th in 3:44:31.

Xiang-Hong Song, 55, of Portland, made this race look controlled from the start. She moved steadily through the women's field — from 44th at the first checkpoint to 30th by mile 13.1 — and never relented. Her 7:37/mi average held up over 26.2 miles in 42°F Napa conditions, and the gap she built was decisive: runner-up Jing Chen, also 55 and racing out of Cupertino, crossed in 3:28:15 (7:57/mi), more than eight and a half minutes back.

Chen's race told a different story in the women's field at large — she slipped from 46th at the first checkpoint to 56th at the halfway mark before recovering to 52nd by the finish, a sign of a mid-race rough patch she ultimately managed. Third-place Annie Wetter of Stevens Point (3:33:04, 8:08/mi) was steadier through the middle miles, logging the 61st-fastest women's split from 13.1 to mile 20, and finished 4:49 behind Chen.

Claudia Samayoa, 59, of San Salvador, was the strongest closer at the front of the field. She had faded through the women's standings from 53rd to 79th by mile 20, but her 74th-fastest women's split on the final stretch held her 4th place at 3:34:21. Meanwhile, Jeanne Marchand's charge from 148th among women at the opening checkpoint all the way to 113th at the tape was the most dramatic move in F55-59 — her 3:44:31 and 5th-place finish the reward. Brenda Blinn (6th, 3:53:42) through Jennifer Cannon (20th, 4:59:00) filled out a deep 31-woman field that made the most of a cool, calm Napa morning.
