Women's Half Marathon: Verdon dominates wire-to-wire in Chicago

• Mao Ichiyama holds 2nd the entire race, finishing in 1:13:44 — a 2:30 gap back — while also clocking the 2nd-fastest women's split on that same 5K–8K stretch.
• Rachel Dadamio's late charge is the race's best momentum story: she entered the final segment 7th and ran the 4th-fastest women's closing split (15K to finish) to vault to 5th in 1:18:29.
• Maor Tiyouri (3rd, 1:13:59) and Diane Nukuri (4th, 1:15:08) traded places mid-race before settling the podium, with Tiyouri posting the 2nd-fastest women's split on the 10K–15K segment and Nukuri the 3rd-fastest on the same stretch.

Carrie Verdon, 25, from Boulder, CO, never let anyone near her. She held 1st among women through every checkpoint and finished in 1:11:14 at a 5:26/mi clip — a commanding 2:30 clear of the field. Her 5K–8K segment was the fastest any woman ran that stretch all day, and the race was effectively over before the halfway mark.

Behind her, Japan's Mao Ichiyama was equally locked in, sitting 2nd from the opening gun to the finish tape. Her 1:13:44 (5:37/mi) was a steady, professional effort — she matched Verdon's 5K–8K aggression more closely than anyone, posting the 2nd-fastest split there, but Verdon had already built too much of a cushion to threaten.

The battle for 3rd and 4th had more drama. Maor Tiyouri (also Boulder) slipped from 3rd to 4th around the 10K mark before reclaiming her spot and crossing in 1:13:59 (5:39/mi) — just 15 seconds behind Ichiyama. Diane Nukuri, 35, from Flagstaff, AZ, ran the 3rd-fastest women's split on the 10K–15K segment and finished 4th in 1:15:08 (5:44/mi), unable to close the gap on Tiyouri in the final miles.

The day's best comeback belonged to Chicagoan Rachel Dadamio. Running 13th at 5K and still 7th heading into the final segment, she unleashed the 4th-fastest women's closing split to finish 5th in 1:18:29 (5:59/mi) — passing six women in the back half of the race. Britney Romero (6th, 1:18:57) and Kristen Heckert (7th, 1:19:25) rounded out the top seven in a women's field of 1,805.
