M20-24: Emad Bashir-Mohammed Runs Away from the Men's Field

Emad Bashir-Mohammed, just 20 years old and representing Aurora, CO, put on a clinic in progressive racing. He entered the 8K checkpoint 7th among men, then moved to 5th, then 3rd, then 2nd — and that's exactly where he finished, holding the position through the final miles at a relentless 4:40-per-mile average. His fastest segment came on the 8K→10K stretch, where he posted the fastest split among all men in the race. In a 270-runner M20-24 field, no one came close to answering.

Ethan Gregg was the most consistent climber of the day. Starting 12th among men, he worked his way methodically through the field — 10th, 9th, 8th — and crossed in 1:02:48 (4:47/mi) to claim 2nd in the age group, 7th among all men. Abdilmana, meanwhile, showed early aggression — 6th among men through 8K — but faded slightly in the second half, finishing 3rd in 1:03:43. The gap from 3rd to 4th (Farmer, 1:07:43) was a decisive four minutes, making the podium a clean story of three runners in a class of their own.

From 5th place onward, the times spread out considerably, with Jacob Freese (1:13:59) and Gabe Klewin (1:14:17) separated by just 18 seconds in a tight battle for 5th and 6th. The top of this age group, though, belonged entirely to Bashir-Mohammed — a wire-to-almost-wire performance that only got sharper as the miles accumulated.
