Alicia Vargo, racing out of Breckenridge, CO — already well-acquainted with the thin air that defines high-altitude running — was simply in a different race from everyone else in the F40-49 field. Her 32:27 at a 14:56/mi clip up a course ranging above 7,000 feet was decisive from the start, and she held her form through the closing Snow King push, where her 26th-fastest women's split confirmed she wasn't fading when it mattered most.

Behind her, the battle for the podium was a genuine contest. Emily Schmitz of Wauwatosa, WI and Danielle Marquette of Meridian, ID were separated by just 16 seconds at the finish — Schmitz taking 2nd in 35:07, Marquette 3rd in 35:23. Both were moving in opposite directions on the final segment: Schmitz climbed from 40th to 37th among the women, while Marquette slipped from 39th to 41st, suggesting Schmitz found another gear on the Snow King stretch that Marquette couldn't quite match.

Julie Powell (37:17) rounded out a solid top four, with Care Bear of Truckee — racing on home turf — completing the top five in 39:12. The field then compressed through the middle, with Ashley Relf, Amy Shertzer, and Holly Ryerson clustered within a minute and a half of each other from 6th through 8th. Thirty-three women finished the ascent on a breezy, dry Tahoe morning, and every one of them earned it.
