M70-74: Poletti and Bouvier Complete the Massif

There are races within races at UTMB, and then there is this one: two 71-year-olds, grinding through 9,700 meters of elevation gain, the cool 57°F air thick with 97% humidity, the course climbing and descending across three countries. Michel Poletti took the M70-74 win in 45:03:24, moving steadily through the men's field across the back half of the race — his gender place climbing from 1474 at the first checkpoint all the way to 1252 at his peak before settling at 1330 at the finish. His sharpest moment came at Champex-Lac, where he posted the 125th-fastest men's split on that segment, a genuine burst of pace deep into a race that had already been going for the better part of two days.

Jean-Louis Bouvier ran a different kind of race. Where Poletti moved forward in the second half, Bouvier's trajectory was more turbulent — drifting back through the men's field in the middle stages before rallying at Vallorcine, where he posted the 560th-fastest men's split, and pushing through to the finish in 45:30:01. That is 59 seconds inside the cutoff. Fifty-nine seconds, after 45 and a half hours of racing through the Alps.

The margin between them — 26 minutes and 37 seconds — is almost beside the point. What matters is that both men finished. At 71, on a course that humbles athletes half their age, Poletti and Bouvier completed the circumnavigation of Mont-Blanc. Chamonix doesn't hand those finishes out.
