Robert Pedersen, 28, from Santa Rosa sat just behind, tracking patiently in 2nd, waiting for his moment. That moment came late: Pedersen posted the fastest men's split from Mile 10 to the finish, reeling Brichta in and crossing the line in 1:04:16 to Brichta's 1:04:24. Eight seconds separated them after 13.1 miles of racing along Capitol Mall, Old Sacramento, and the Sacramento River.

Brayden Mclaughlin, 26, of Loomis was quietly building his own race. Starting 5th, he worked his way to 4th by Mile 6.55 and then ran the 3rd-fastest Mile 6.55→Mile 10 split among men to lock up 3rd place in 1:04:59 — a podium earned through steady, intelligent racing. Grayson Hough, 34, finished 4th in 1:06:25, while Garrett Macquiddy, 24, rounded out the top five in 1:07:07 — he'd actually posted the 2nd-fastest men's split through the 5K→Mile 6.55 segment but couldn't sustain that pace to the line.

Behind the podium, the race thinned into a tight cluster. Dylan White (1:07:09, 6th) and Seth Totten (1:07:13, 7th) were separated by just four seconds. Cameron Duquette came in 8th at 1:07:32, and then came the day's most quietly impressive result: Malcolm Richards of Sacramento, 43 years old, running 5:11/mi to finish 9th in 1:07:55 — ahead of 1,854 other men on the day.
