Men's Half Marathon: Cowley Seizes Control at Mile 5, Holds On for the Win

• Noah Cowley, 1:16:50 (5:52/mi): Won the men's race after posting the fastest men's split from 4.8M–6.7M — the move that flipped the lead for good.
• Ian Sande, 1:18:07: Led through the early miles on the strength of the fastest men's split from 2.5M–4.8M, finishing 1:17 back of Cowley in 2nd.
• Ryan Olson, 1:19:22: Climbed from 5th at the opening checkpoint to 3rd at the line, powered by the 2nd-fastest men's split on the closing 10.7M–Finish stretch.
• Kyle Downs, 40, 1:21:33: Locked in 5th from the 2.5M mark and never wavered — the steadiest ride in the top five, and the fastest 40-year-old in the men's field.

The men's race in Bismarck opened with a bold move from Kyle Marcotte, just 20 years old, who grabbed the lead out of the gate and held it through the first two checkpoints. But Marcotte couldn't sustain the pace — he slipped to 3rd by the midpoint and eventually settled 4th at 1:20:15 (6:07/mi). Behind him, Ian Sande was doing real damage in the early going, running the fastest men's split from 2.5M to 4.8M to surge from 3rd to 1st. At that point, it looked like Sande's race to lose.

Then came Noah Cowley. The 22-year-old Bismarck local had been lurking — as low as 3rd at the 4.8M mark — before uncorking the fastest men's split on the 4.8M–6.7M segment to vault into the lead. He never gave it back. Cowley crossed in 1:16:50 at a 5:52/mi clip, finishing 1:17 clear of Sande and just over a minute ahead of Eric Hasby's 2024 winning time of 1:15:47 — a useful benchmark for just how competitive this year's front end was in cool, humid conditions.

Ryan Olson was the quiet story of the finish. The 31-year-old from Hibbing, MN spent most of the race in 4th or 5th before turning in the 2nd-fastest men's closing split (10.7M to finish) to claim 3rd at 1:19:22. Further back, David Wong, 56, deserves a mention — 8th overall among the men at 1:26:58 (6:38/mi), a sharp performance in a 240-man field that ran deep with local North Dakota talent.
