Women's Half Marathon: Cullen surges to the title in cool San Francisco fog

• Margie Cullen wins in 1:27:29 (6:40/mi), posting the fastest women's split on the 6.43M–8.3M stretch to break the race open.
• Maya Brochu, 17, rockets from 20th to 2nd — the biggest move in the women's field — finishing in 1:30:08 with the fastest women's split on the 5.7M–6.43M segment.
• Elle Marsyla, 18, rounds out the podium at 1:30:44, just 36 seconds behind Brochu and 3rd-fastest on the 6.43M–8.3M segment.
• Valerie Mecham, 46, finishes 9th among 1,940 women at 1:35:15 — the standout age performance in the top ten.

Cullen spent the first half of the race in second place, patient and controlled, before making her decisive move. Her fastest women's split on the 6.43M–8.3M stretch was the moment the race was won — she went from second to first and never looked back, crossing in 1:27:29 at a 6:40/mi clip. The overcast 54°F conditions along the San Francisco waterfront were about as ideal as the city offers, and Cullen took full advantage.

Behind her, the most electric story belonged to 17-year-old Maya Brochu of Bow, NH. Starting 20th among women, she was still 7th at the midpoint — then she unleashed the fastest women's split on the 5.7M–6.43M segment to begin her charge, ultimately climbing all the way to 2nd in 1:30:08. That's a 6:53/mi average for a teenager who ran most of the race from behind. Fellow teenager Elle Marsyla, 18, of Woodside, CA was similarly impressive: she entered the top ten early, moved steadily through the field, and finished 3rd in 1:30:44 with the 3rd-fastest split on that same late segment.

The mid-race battle for positions two through five was fierce. Nicole Ticea sat as high as 2nd at the 8.3M checkpoint before fading to 5th (1:32:31, 7:03/mi), while Courtney Munley of San Francisco was a steady presence all day, holding near the front throughout to claim 4th in 1:31:38. Ashley Lin (6th, 1:34:10) and Beatrice Huang (7th, 1:34:27) separated themselves from the chase pack, with Anne-Claire Tande (8th, 1:35:01) and Mecham (9th, 1:35:15) completing a tight top ten spread across just under eight minutes. Claire Stewart rounded out the top ten in 1:35:24.
