Greg Nicoll, 70, of Redwood City came in 4th at 2:18:32, never quite threatening the podium but finishing a solid 10:34/mi pace. José Javier Guerrero Castañeda, 71, made the trip from Ciudad de México and finished 5th in 2:37:28, though the course clearly bit back — his gender place fell from 979th at the first checkpoint all the way to 1,764th at the line.

Back in the field, the closest battle of the day played out between Gerald Cohen, 74, of Piedmont and Howard Goldfarb, 74, of La Verne. Both crossed in 2:54:5x — Cohen in 2:54:57, Goldfarb in 2:54:59 — separated by just two seconds after 13-plus miles of racing. Alan Wong, 70, of San Francisco brought the 14-man M70-74 field home in 3:22:49, completing a group that ranged nearly 80 minutes from front to back across a challenging, fog-wrapped San Francisco course.
