F70-74 Half Marathon: Wilson edges Nestore in a sub-3-hour battle at 70

Mia Wilson, 70, of Albany, set the tone from the gun and never relinquished the lead. Running a steady 13:40/mi, she was the only one in this five-woman field to crack three hours — and she did it in San Francisco, a course that doesn't hand out fast times cheaply. Her gender place drifted gradually from 2,636 to 2,806 across the race, a reflection of the field thinning around her as she held her own pace rather than any fade.

Lori Nestore, also 70 and racing out of Oakland, was the race's most compelling chaser. She ran the 10.54M–11.05M segment with the 1,905th-fastest women's split on that stretch — a genuine surge that trimmed the gap to Wilson. But 91 seconds is 91 seconds; Wilson had built enough of a cushion that Nestore's late push landed her in 2nd at 3:00:40, not 1st. It's a close finish in absolute terms, and a fine result for both women at 70.

Barbara Wessen Chang, 72, of Sacramento, was methodical throughout. Her gender place barely moved across the race — from 2,920 at the first checkpoint down to 2,866 at the finish — and she posted the 2,530th-fastest women's split on the 11.05M-to-finish leg, closing solidly to claim 3rd in 3:03:08. Christine Barbuto, also 72, finished 4th in 3:17:08 at a 15:02/mi pace, while Young Soon Kim, 73, of Diamond Bar, finished 5th in 3:51:06 — the only finisher in this field over 70 years old to go the distance past the four-hour mark on the clock.
