F65-69: Erin Murphy Runs Away from the Field Along the Silverado Trail

Erin Murphy of Santa Cruz controlled this race from start to finish. Running at 8:54 per mile across 26.2 miles on a cool, humid morning through Napa's wine country, she was never seriously threatened. Her gender place among all women fluctuated through the middle miles — dipping as low as 237th before rallying to 197th around the 20-mile mark — but in F65-69, the outcome was never in doubt. She even posted the 177th-fastest women's split on the 16.2-to-20-mile stretch, a strong surge in the back half of the race.

Sacramento's Cory Benson, 68, was the story of the chase pack. Running 9:07 per mile, she was the only other finisher to crack four hours, finishing in 3:59:13. Her gender place among all women slipped considerably through the middle — from 225th at the half to 274th by the 13.1-to-16.2-mile segment — before she steadied and came home 2nd. The 5:43 gap to Murphy was real and consistent; Benson was never truly within striking distance, but her sub-four-hour effort at age 68 stands as one of the day's more impressive performances in this field.

Behind the top two, the race took a dramatic turn. Linda Burrell of Derwood, MD (4:32:52, 10:24/mi) and Lori Sherman of North Bethesda, MD (4:35:50, 10:30/mi) ran closely matched races for 3rd and 4th, separated by just under three minutes. Cindy Egger of Galt, CA told a different story: she entered the women's field at 265th through the first half before fading steadily to 506th by the finish, crossing in 4:41:59. Siew Chuah rounded out the top six in 4:45:18, with Kathryn Kelly (5:03:15), Rosa Cameron (5:17:58), Chrissy Ferguson (5:25:07), Mary Lynn Askin (5:30:39), and Venetia Louie Chee (5:55:31) completing all 11 finishers in F65-69.
