The headline story in M70-74 was as close as it gets without being a tie. Paul Braunschweiler, 74 years old and racing out of Omaha, crossed in 1:54:23 to claim the win — but Changming Shih of Cupertino was right there, finishing 2nd in 1:54:31. Both averaged 8:44/mi across the course, but Braunschweiler's final leg told the difference: he posted the 390th-fastest men's split on the 6.9M-to-Finish stretch, while Shih clocked the 393rd-fastest on that same segment. Shih had actually tracked Braunschweiler closely through the men's standings all race long — moving from 359th among men at the first checkpoint to 422nd at mid-race, then recovering to 411th at the finish, while Braunschweiler ran a nearly parallel arc from 362nd to 413th and back to 405th. The finish time separated them; the effort was a genuine battle the whole way.

Jack Zakarian of Orinda ran his own race entirely, clocking 2:20:53 for 3rd — a 10:45/mi effort that put him well clear of the rest of the field behind him. Laurence Akiyoshi of Napa, also 74, came in 4th at 2:24:06, with a strong close: his 731st-fastest men's split on the final stretch helped him move up from 814th among men at mid-race to 782nd at the finish. Gary Barnett of Antioch finished 5th in 2:37:42 at 12:02/mi, fading slightly over the back half — his 791st-fastest men's split on the middle segment reflected a tougher stretch through miles 3.1 to 6.9. Stuart Steele of Walnut Creek rounded out the six finishers in 3:21:20, crossing at 15:21/mi in what was a very different kind of day on the course.
