• Winner: Unknown Unknown-Fo, 4:23:29 (8:29/mi) — more than 1:33:00 ahead of 2nd place, with the fastest women's split on the Sandstone 1→Sandstone 2 segment.
• Closest battle of the day: Michele Holtkamp (3rd, 6:01:23) and Brigitte Schmittlein (4th, 6:01:24) — one second apart after more than six hours of racing.
• Biggest mover: Holtkamp climbed from 15th among women at the first checkpoint all the way to 3rd at the finish, posting the 2nd-fastest women's split on the Toro Creek→Finish stretch.
• Age standout: Suzy Kisylia, 57, finished 5th in 6:20:43 — ahead of seven women more than two decades her junior — and posted the 3rd-fastest women's split on the Sandstone 1→Sandstone 2 segment.

The headline story in the women's field was never really in doubt. Unknown Unknown-Fo of Mill Valley moved into the lead by the second checkpoint and never looked back, crossing in 4:23:29 at an 8:29/mi clip — a margin of over 93 minutes on runner-up Svatava Wright. She also owned the fastest women's split through the Sandstone 1→Sandstone 2 stretch, where Wright posted the second-fastest to hold her position. Wright, a Monterey local racing in her own backyard, held 2nd from the third checkpoint onward and finished in 5:56:20 (11:28/mi).

Behind Wright, the race delivered one of the tightest finishes you'll see at a 50K. Holtkamp and Schmittlein were separated by a single second — 6:01:23 to 6:01:24 — after more than six hours on the course. But that near-identical finish time masks a very different late-race story: Holtkamp was running the 2nd-fastest women's split on the Toro Creek→Finish leg, catching and just holding off Schmittlein, who had posted the 2nd-fastest women's split on Skyline→Oil Well earlier in the race. One ran the back half faster; the other had surged in the middle. One second decided it.

Kisylia's 5th-place finish at age 57 deserves its own mention. Running 6:20:43 (12:15/mi) and recording the 3rd-fastest women's Sandstone 1→Sandstone 2 split, she finished comfortably ahead of Shannon Dyer (6th, 6:22:42) and a field that skewed considerably younger. Rounding out the top ten: Abby Yassin (7th, 6:27:54), Mary Weyant (8th, 6:33:30), Sarah Dalton (9th, 6:39:06), and Emma Lefebvre (10th, 6:41:00) — all 33 women finishing on a clear, cool February day at Fort Ord.
