Boston Marathon M55-59: Ashby Edges Out a Tight Podium at the 129th

Robert Ashby of Maine took the M55-59 title at the 129th Boston Marathon, crossing Copley Square in 2:43:19 at a 6:14/mi clip. His path wasn't without turbulence — his men's standing slipped from 950th at the first checkpoint all the way back to 1,252nd before he steadied and clawed back to 1,088th by the finish. That late-race recovery, including a strong 24M-to-40K segment, proved just enough.

Vivian Foley pushed him hardest, finishing 2nd in 2:43:58. But Foley's story is one of a race run in reverse: she entered the top 700 among women early, then steadily faded to 1,181st by the end — a classic positive split that still delivered a strong 6:15/mi and a runner-up podium. The 39-second gap to Ashby is real, but it tells only part of the story; Foley was the faster runner early and Ashby the stronger finisher.

The battle for 3rd was settled by the finest of margins. Michael Turner and Richard Swindlehurst both finished in 2:46:34, with Turner taking 3rd and Swindlehurst 4th by the tiebreaker of the clock's finer digits. Their routes to that identical displayed time could hardly have been more different: Turner started conservatively at 2,569th among men and surged all the way to 1,541st — one of the great climbs of the day in this group — while Swindlehurst ran a far more even race, hovering near 1,500th–1,600th throughout.

David Principe of Rhode Island rounded out the top five in 2:50:07, with Eric Hunziker (2:50:51), Attila Kovacs (2:51:38), and Rob Zand (2:51:39) forming a tight cluster just behind. Jonathan Ratcliffe (10th, 2:52:38) edged Paul Freary (11th, 2:53:05) and Liam Cotter (12th, 2:53:08) in a similarly packed stretch. In a field of 1,648, the depth of this age group on Boylston Street was formidable.
