Sandy Rutledge came to Boston and made it look controlled from the gun. Running 7:43 per mile across the Newton Hills and over Heartbreak Hill in 49°F drizzle, Rutledge steadily climbed through the women's field — moving from around 9,454th among women at the first checkpoint all the way to 7,807th by the finish — a consistent, metronomic push that never relented. The margin over second place, 2:11, tells the story plainly: this was a wire-to-wire command performance in M70-74.

Behind Rutledge, John Woodnutt made his own move through the second half, working from 8,894th among women at the early checkpoints back up to 8,149th by the end — a sign that he was reeling people in late. He finished in 3:24:33, comfortably second. Then came one of the tightest sub-battles of the morning: John Hieb of California and Kenji Oohashi crossed the line in 3:27:39 and 3:27:48 respectively, just nine seconds apart after more than three and a half hours of racing. Hieb had run the stronger middle miles while Oohashi showed a bit more life on the 23-to-24-mile stretch — but Hieb held on for third.

Alan Pemberton of Maryland was steady throughout, gradually working his way up the field to claim fifth in 3:31:19. Steve Yee (CA, 3:34:27), Eduardo Matsuo (MI, 3:36:06), and Joseph Clark (PA, 3:36:39) filled out sixth through eighth, with Washington Terra (3:37:11) and Maurice O'Connell (3:37:34) rounding out the top ten — five men separated by barely 23 seconds across places six through ten. All 213 finishers earned their Copley Square finish line on a raw, windswept New England morning.
