Huculak, 45 and racing on home turf in Newtonville, turned the 5K–8K segment into his moment. He posted the fastest men's split on that stretch, moving from 2nd to 1st and opening a gap that Bertrand — despite running the second-fastest split on the same segment — could not close. Huculak crossed the line in 46:11 at a 7:26/mi clip, a full 1:54 ahead of Bertrand's 48:05. That's not a photo finish; that's a decisive move made in the heat and held to the tape.

Bertrand's 48:05 at age 55 and 7:44/mi is a performance worth noting in its own right — he led the race through the halfway mark and never truly faded, just got outrun by a faster surge.
