Women's 50K: Knudson Surges Late to Claim Tahoe Rim

• Rachael Knudson won the women's race in 5:59:45 (11:35/mi), the only woman to break six hours — edging Julia Raffaini by 16:19.
• Raffaini led the women's race through the first four checkpoints before Knudson's decisive move on the Hobart→Waterfall segment, where Knudson posted the fastest women's split of the day.
• Chloe Hataway charged from 8th to 3rd in the final stretch, finishing in 7:01:50 with the 3rd-fastest women's split on the Waterfall→Finish leg — a strong close at altitude.
• Places 5 through 9 were separated by just 1:01 (7:10:50 to 7:16:52), making the mid-pack battle one of the tightest of the day.

This was a race of two very different stories at the front. Julia Raffaini of South Lake Tahoe ran a controlled, disciplined race — sitting in the lead among women from the gun and posting the fastest women's split on the Kick Ash→Snow Valley Peak segment. At 12:06/mi over 31 miles above 7,000 feet, she looked poised to hold on. But Rachael Knudson — also of South Lake Tahoe — had other plans. Running as low as 6th among women after the Snow Valley Peak checkpoint, Knudson turned the Hobart→Waterfall leg into a defining move, posting the fastest women's split there and vaulting from 6th to 1st. She never looked back, finishing in 5:59:45 to Raffaini's 6:16:04.

Behind them, Chloe Hataway (Carson City, NV, age 26) ran one of the most compelling arcs in the field. She was 9th among women at the first checkpoint and still 8th at the midpoint, but she steadily climbed — 4th by the penultimate checkpoint, then 3rd at the finish in 7:01:50. Her 3rd-fastest women's split on the closing Waterfall→Finish leg tells the story: she was accelerating while others faded on the long haul through high-elevation terrain.

Erica Viloria (Dayton, NV) and Emily Warfield (Truckee, CA) rounded out the top five in 7:09:19 and 7:10:50 respectively — Viloria also a strong finisher who climbed from 11th to 4th, while Warfield had cracked the top three at one point before settling 5th. Lyndsey Taylor (7:14:37) and 21-year-old Kayla Szulc (7:15:52) claimed 6th and 7th, with Sofia Goodwin just seven seconds behind in 8th at 7:15:59. Ellie Martin of Bozeman, MT — at 47, the oldest finisher in the top ten — crossed 10th in 7:22:38, a result that speaks for itself on a course that doesn't forgive anyone, regardless of age.
