Women's 5K: Lucey surges to the front in San Francisco

Under cool, humid conditions along the San Francisco waterfront — 58°F with 87% humidity and a 9 mph wind — Morgan Lucey ran one of the sharpest women's performances the race has seen. Her 18:55 at 6:05/mi not only won the women's race outright but bettered the 2022 women's winning time of 20:08 by over a minute. Kurstin Kalisek pushed her the whole way, finishing 2nd in 19:05 at 6:09/mi — a faster pace than the previous year's winner, yet still 10 seconds shy of Lucey on this day.

Jacqueline Tierney's 3rd-place finish in 19:39 deserves its own spotlight. The 31-year-old from Massapequa didn't just toe the 5K line — she also raced the full Marathon, finishing 6th among women there. Doubling across distances at the same event is no small feat, and her 6:19/mi here shows she had plenty left.

Megan Kossar was the story of the back half of the top five. At 52, she ran 19:59 at 6:26/mi to finish 4th — ahead of 661 other women in the field. The gap between her and 5th-place Becky Philipson (22:11, 7:08/mi) underscores just how strong that front quartet was. Kaelin McGill (6th, 22:41) and Alex Testa (7th, 22:43) were separated by only two seconds, while Phyllis Jones, 73, finishing 15th in 24:33, quietly delivered one of the most age-defying efforts on the course.
