Napa Valley Half Marathon: Kayla Knapp Runs Down the Lead and Seizes the Win

• Jenny Hitchings, 59, 1:21:38 (6:14/mi) — the standout age story of the day, finishing 9th among 1,358 women and outrunning athletes decades younger.
• Heidi Greenwood, 10th in 1:21:47 — returned to Napa a year after her 8th-place finish in 1:20:59, crossing 48 seconds slower but still firmly in the top 10 of a deep field.

The decisive moment in the women's race came in the second half. Theresa Hailey of Portland had built herself into the lead through the 6.9-mile mark, but Kayla Knapp of Sunnyvale wasn't done. Knapp ran the fastest women's closing split of the entire field, reeling Hailey in and pulling clear to win in 1:14:32 at a 5:41/mi clip — 34 seconds ahead at the line. Hailey's 1:15:06 and second-fastest closing split showed she didn't fade so much as get outrun by someone who had another gear.

Ally Markovich of Berkeley rounded out the podium in 1:17:27 (5:54/mi), holding 3rd from the 6.9-mile mark to the finish with the third-fastest women's closing split. Jen Odenheimer (4th, 1:18:15) likewise held her position, and Annie Marggraff of San Francisco made the race's most notable positional move — climbing from 7th at 6.9 miles to 5th at the finish with the fifth-fastest closing split, crossing in 1:20:07.

Just three seconds separated 5th from 6th. Marggraff's 1:20:07 edged Aileen Barry's 1:20:10, with Rachel Mitchell (7th, 1:20:30) close behind — three athletes packed into 23 seconds. Then came Andrea Corazzari Ugalde, 43, finishing 8th in 1:21:25, and the afternoon's most compelling subplot: Jenny Hitchings of Sacramento, 59 years old, crossing in 1:21:38 to claim 9th among all women. In a field of 1,358, that's a performance that needs no qualifier.
