Broken Arrow 4.6 Mile: Veda Caputo-Wilkowski Wins the Girls' Race at 10 Years Old

Veda Caputo-Wilkowski, just 10 years old and based in Laramie, WY — herself no stranger to altitude — ran away from a field of 20 girls to win in 52:18. Her 11:27/mi average over 4.6 miles of mountain trail at Olympic Valley, where the air thins above 6,200 feet, was a performance the rest of the field simply couldn't answer. Runner-up Bailey Betts, 13, from Highlands Ranch, CO, finished in 55:27 — a solid 12:09/mi — but Veda had already put three minutes and nine seconds of daylight between them.

Third place went to Siya Dalal, 12, of Cupertino, CA, in 56:40. That set up a fascinating mid-pack battle just below her: Lelia Martin (11, Truckee, CA) and Stella Streit (11, also Truckee) ran the entire race and crossed the finish line in what the clock read as 59:19 for both — but Martin took 4th by four-tenths of a second, with Streit 5th a blink behind. Ave Adriani, 13, of Olympic Valley itself, followed in 59:43 to round out the top six.

The race's tightest cluster came in the middle of the pack, where Ellery Metres (7th, 1:02:04), Simona Spalekova (8th, 1:02:06), and Juniper Woolf (9th, 1:02:36) were separated by just 32 seconds across three finishers. Near the back, Carpenter and Geiger staged their own photo-finish duel, separated by half a second after 18th and 19th place respectively. Every girl on this start list ran a real mountain race — none more remarkably than 9-year-old Ella Brooks, who covered the course in 1:06:43 for 12th place.
