Men's 5K: Shubert Dominates a Deep, All-Ages Field

• Dylan Shubert, 21, wins in 16:08 — a 5:12/mi pace that put nearly 70 seconds between him and every other man in the field.
• Nathaniel Moore, 40, runs 17:17 for a strong 2nd-place finish, holding off a fierce charge from the back of the top five.
• 13-year-old Carter Brown finishes 5th in 18:17, one of three 13-year-olds in the top 10 — a remarkable showing from Clovis's youngest.
• Joey Quaccia and Charlie Rubenstein, both 13, both clock 19:46 — same displayed time, but Rubenstein edges 9th and Quaccia takes 10th by the finest of margins.

Dylan Shubert came to Fresno and made it look easy. His 16:08 — a 5:12/mi clip through the streets — was in a class of its own, building a 1:09 gap over 2nd place that no one in a 233-man field could close. Nathaniel Moore was the clear runner-up story: the 40-year-old from Clovis crossed in 17:17 at 5:34/mi, running well clear of the rest of the podium and proving age is no barrier to speed at the front of the pack.

Third place went to 14-year-old Michelle Leath of Fresno, who finished in 17:58 — a 5:47/mi effort that held off Sonny Malady (18:05, 4th) by just seven seconds. Malady's 5:49/mi was close but not quite enough to catch Leath over the final stretch. Right behind them, 13-year-old Carter Brown crossed 5th in 18:17, capping a remarkable top five that spanned from age 13 to age 40.

The youth movement didn't stop there. Jacob Binsfield (6th, 18:52), Charlie Rubenstein and Joey Quaccia (9th and 10th, both 19:46), and J. Blevins (11th, 19:56, age 12) kept the pressure on throughout the top half of the field. At the other end of the age spectrum, Robert Boshart, 60, crossed in 22:45 for 20th — a 7:19/mi pace that deserves its own applause among 233 finishers on a Sunday morning in Fresno.
