Caitlin Amburgey, 27, owned this race from start to finish. She held the lead throughout and then turned the screws in the second half, running the fastest back-5K split among all women to close in 40:55 at 6:35/mi. Sara Wolf, 40, was her closest pursuer the entire way, crossing 2nd in 41:32 — a 37-second deficit that never truly closed, despite Wolf running the 3rd-fastest second-half split in the women's field.

The most dramatic move of the race came just behind them. Sophie Faber, 22, sat 4th at the halfway mark but unleashed the 2nd-fastest women's second-half split to overtake Savannah Hansen and claim 3rd in 42:01. Hansen, just 14 years old, had been running in 3rd through the first 5K at 6:53/mi average pace, but Faber's surge was too much — Hansen finished 4th in 42:49, still a remarkable effort for her age. Nancy Lee rounded out the top five in 42:55, just six seconds back.

Then there was Beverley Anderson-Abbs. The 61-year-old from Sacramento finished 6th in the women's field with a 43:00 at 6:55/mi — a result that speaks for itself in a field of 954. Marissa Ruxin took 7th in 44:48, with Estela Vergara 8th in 45:38, before the pack spread out through the remainder of the morning's finishers. From a teenage phenom to a 61-year-old top-six, this women's race had range — and Amburgey had the finishing kick to cap it all off.
