Aiden Kato, all of 15 years old and representing San Jose, ran away with the men's race in 18:30 — a 5:57-per-mile clip through San Francisco's cool, damp morning air. His margin over fellow 15-year-old Marcus Balistreri of Pacifica was a decisive 16 seconds, with Balistreri crossing in 18:46 at 6:02/mi. For two teenagers to go 1-2 in a 462-man field is a headline of its own.

The battle for the final podium spot was the tensest moment of the morning. Brian Chapman, 46, of Pleasanton ran 19:01 at 6:07/mi to claim 3rd — holding off Kevin Huey, 27, also of Pleasanton, who finished in 19:02. One second was all that separated them after more than three miles of racing.

The youth story didn't stop at the top two. Shaan Shinde, 15 (Fremont), finished 7th in 19:50, and Nathan Kato — 14 years old and Aiden's fellow San Jose runner — came home 8th in 19:56. Four finishers aged 15 or younger in the top eight is a remarkable showing. Meanwhile, Chapman's 3rd-place finish at age 46 stands as the standout veteran performance of the morning, edging out Carlo Segala, 40, who rounded out the top five in 19:40 (6:20/mi).

Further back, Brian Anthony Hernandez (9th, 19:59) and Coty Toney (10th, 20:07) just missed cracking the top nine, while Warren Pereira of Sydney matched Toney's 20:07 for 11th. The top 20 closed out with Ryan Buensuceso's 21:24 — leaving a 2:54 gap from wire to 20th that reflects just how sharp the leading pack ran on a cool, fog-shrouded San Francisco morning.
