Men's 10K: Ryder Jay Surges Late to Take the Win

The men's 10K at Broken Arrow unfolded at altitude — the course ranging up to nearly 8,000 feet above sea level — and it was a race that didn't truly reveal itself until the final descent off Snow King. Through the early going, Braddock Hewitt, a 15-year-old from Colorado Springs, held the lead and looked every bit the frontrunner. But the closing segment had other ideas.

Ryder Jay, 18, from Littleton, CO, was running in 2nd when it mattered most. On the Snow King→Finish leg he posted the fastest closing split among the men, moving past Hewitt and crossing in 48:32 at 7:49/mi. Tyson Gubler, also 18 and from Riverton, UT, was right behind him — posting the 2nd-fastest closing split to finish in 48:45, just 13 seconds back in 2nd. Hewitt, despite fading to the 4th-fastest closing split, still held on for 3rd in 50:21 — a remarkable result for a 15-year-old in a field of 45.

Behind the podium, the race for 4th was its own story. Elio Adriani, 16, racing on home turf in Olympic Valley, ran the 3rd-fastest closing split to move from 6th place up to 4th, finishing in 51:58. That late charge was just enough to hold off Enzo Giampaolo (5th, 52:13), who had the 5th-fastest closing split himself. Kellen Purvance Rassuchine, 14, was the youngest finisher in the top six, crossing in 55:12 for 6th — a strong showing at an age where most kids aren't racing mountain courses at 7,000-plus feet.
