Women's Race: Wanjiru Surges to the Front and Holds On at Berlin

• Rosemary Wanjiru wins in 2:21:05 (5:23/mi), edging Dera Dida by just three seconds in one of the tightest women's finishes Berlin has seen.
• Three women finished within 24 seconds — Wanjiru (2:21:05), Dida (2:21:08), and Azmera Gebru (2:21:29) — all averaging 5:23–5:24/mi across 26.2 miles.
• Viola Cheptoo's second half was the story of the race's back end: the 35-year-old moved from 9th at the halfway point all the way to 4th, posting the 5th-fastest women's second-half split to finish in 2:21:40.

Rosemary Wanjiru did not lead from the front — she built to it. Running in 2nd or 3rd through the opening half, she posted the 3rd-fastest women's first-half split and then made her decisive move: by 25K she had taken the lead and never relinquished it, crossing the Brandenburg Gate in 2:21:05. That three-second margin over Dida was earned through a sustained push in the race's middle miles, not a late sprint.

Dera Dida ran a disciplined race from the opposite end of the field. Starting 4th, she dropped as far back as 6th through 10K — where she posted the 3rd-fastest women's 5K→10K split — before methodically working her way back. She reached the podium by 35K and finished 2nd in 2:21:08, three seconds behind Wanjiru and 21 seconds ahead of Azmera Gebru. Gebru herself had been as high as 2nd through the first half, posting the 2nd-fastest women's first-half split, but faded slightly over the closing miles to take 3rd in 2:21:29.

The most dramatic trajectory in the field belonged to Viola Cheptoo. The 35-year-old sat 9th at the halfway mark and held that position through 30K — then shifted gears. Her 5th-fastest women's second-half split carried her past four competitors to finish 4th in 2:21:40, just 35 seconds off the winner. Fantu Worku, who had run near the front all day (3rd through the first half), faded to 5th in 2:21:57, while Fabienne Königstein rounded out a strong top six in 2:22:17. Behind them, a field of 17,181 women made their own runs at this flat, fast course through historic Berlin.
